Michael Garellek

Michael Garellek is the leader of the Financial Services Regulatory Group and a partner in Gowling WLG’s Montréal office.  He has extensive experience assisting Canadian and foreign banks, insurance companies, trust companies and other regulated financial institutions as well as a number of Fintech companies, MSBs and crypto-asset trading platforms in respect of regulatory and compliance questions in Canada, including anti-money laundering and custody of assets.  Michael advises clients on transactions (M&A), blockchain-related agreements, the application of the law and regulations in Québec and Canada and in dealing with regulators, namely the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI).  Michael represents clients subject to examination, investigation and sometimes prosecution by regulators.  Michael lectures at the University of Montréal on M&A and corporate and securities law.  A CPA, Michael was previously an inspector with the AMF .   He was recognized as a Next Generation Partner in Insurance in the 2022 edition of The Legal 500 Canada and in 2019 and 2020, he was named an “Acritas Star”.
